HYDRO ENERGY

There is an abundance of potential energy stored in water,  fast moving streams, rivers, lakes and even the ocean. When water moves, it does so using energy, a few hundred years ago people understood this and started to harness this power. They used a device called a watermill that would spin when the water pushed against it. This energy was transferred from the water to move the water mill.. The mill then turns a series of gears that are connected to grinders which then crushes grain.

Today a portion of electricity is generated from water. It is the same principle but instead of crushing grains it spins a generator which then generates electricity.

  1. Hydro electricity may be a viable option in the Caribbean for a clean renewable energy source. Economically, it is more sustainable than hydrocarbons. There are numerous options including tidal power, wave power, ocean thermal energy conversion and ocean currents.
